CHAPTER I
PLOT ANALYSIS OF “THE LOST WORLD”
1.      Exposition
The Lost World was written in 1912 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This is an exciting and unusual adventure story. This novel which consists of 64 pages, tells us about the adventure in a land where creatures from the past still live.
For many hundreds of years, scientists have thought about how life began on Earth. Since about 400 BC people have found the bones of enormous animals in the ground. At first, no one knew which animals the bones come from. Today, we know more about these creatures. We know that they lived between 245 and 64 MILLION years ago. They were the largest creatures that ever lived.
In 1912, there was a twenty-three years man named Edward Malone. He was a reporter for a news paper in London, Daily Gazette. One day, he went to his news editor, McArdle, to get a dangerous and adventurous mission. He was sent to interview Professor George Edward Challenger, who had assaulted four or five other journalists, to determine if his claims about his trip to South America were true. After assaulting Malone, Challenger revealed his discovery of dinosaurs in South America, in the forest round the River Amazon. After having been ridiculed for years, he invited Malone on a trip to prove his story, along with Professor Summerlee, another scientist qualified to examine any evidence, and Lord John Roxton, an adventurer who knew the Amazon. They reached the plateau with the aid of five Indian and two mixed race guides, who are superstitiously scared of the area. One of these Indians was tall and strong, called Sancho. The two men of mixed race were called Gomez and Miguel. Gomez is the brother of a man that Roxton killed the last time he was in South America.
2.      Raising Conflict
When the expedition manages to get onto the plateau, Gomez and Miguel destroy their bridge, trapping them. Gomez climbed down the rock to the ground slowly. Lord Roxton pointed his gun and fired, and Gomez’s body fell to the ground below. Miguel had reached the ground far below. Their "devoted negro" Sancho jumped on Miguel, and killed him. Sancho remained at the base, but was unable to prevent the rest of the Indians from leaving.
Deciding to investigate the lost world, they were attacked by pterodactyls at a swamp. After exploring the terrain and having a few misadventures in which the expedition narrowly misses being killed by dinosaurs, Challenger, Summerlee, and Roxton were captured by a race of ape-men. Malone was not captured because he did not there when his friend was captured.
3.      Climax
While in their village, they found out there was also a tribe of humans (They were small Indian men) inhabiting the other side of the plateau with whom The Ape-Men were constantly at war. Roxton was able to ran out from The Ape-Men, and met Malone.
Roxton managed to escape and team up with Malone to mount to a rescue. They arrived just in time to prevent the executions of the Professors and several other humans, who took them to the human tribe. With their help, they defeated the ape-men, taking control of the whole plateau, and Roxton had shot The Ape-King.
4.      End
After witnessing the power of their guns, the human tribe did not want the expedition to leave, and tried to keep them there. However, the team finally discovered a tunnel that led to the outside, where they met up with Sancho and a large rescue party. Upon returning to England, they presented their report which included pictures and a newspaper reported by Edward, which many dismiss liked they did Challenger's original story. Having planned ahead, Challenger showed them a live pterodactyl as proof, which then escaped and flew out into the ocean.
