CHAPTER I

PLOT ANALYSIS OF “SUMMER DREAMS”

1.         Exposition

Katy spring was a student of  university. katy’s summer promised to be the most chalenging one of her life.she would spend the summer vocation by working.Before spending of vocation came she met someone in her history class ,his name is steve kaplan . the little thing which made them introduced each other was when steven reached up to the lecture at the top of display and he picked one up ,examined and handed to katy.there was something started kelly was nervous to meet someone. Accidentlly she met steve again in market and helped again to looked for her groceries loosing. And they talked about their summer job  .Katy would send applience to job and so did steve.

2.     Rising Conflict

Katy made application job to Mr.Bradshaw for talking care a blind boy ,michael. Michael’s eye problems started when he was three and a half,mr.bradsaw took him to every doctor in California,they even flew to New York several times.but things only got worse and the very best doctors told them there was no hope. They said michael was destined to be blind.And michael’s mother was killed in a car accident.michael still wasn’t over about his mother.so he wasn’t charming and he was so bad-temprament.Mr.Bradsaw was planning on moving to the East Coast in September , he has found a special school for michael ,mr.Bradsaw has taken six months off from his job to help michael ,but he had to get back to his business so he thought of hiring a regular nurse,but michael would have hated that. That’s why he turned to look for employ a younger person,someone with energy and imagination. Katy felt that take care michael was a great chalenging for her and then she followed job interview to Mr.Bradshaw . but after waiting for application answer so long she has refused by Mr.Bradshaw because he has chosen another student and he  thought that katy’s school was so full of serious students who will be dedicated to their career. Katy was upset because of that ,and he tried to find who is someone accepted by mr.bradshaw.

Katy was upset after being rejected by mr. Bradsaw cause he was loosing her summer dreams . he knew that someone who rejected by mr.bradsaw was Steven. She decided to be volunteer of taking care michael ,but when she came to michael’s house michael said  “I’m glad my father didn’t choose you,when my dad said there was a girl named katy who wanted to come here ,I told him i didn’t want you !” it made katy so hurt but steven amused her and suggested her to stay be volunteer.steven said why he took a katy’s dream job he’s going to be a doctor .He has already applied to begin college at UCLA a year from this fall. The plan were made a long time ago when his dad was sill alive,but then he died snd they found out that almost all the money owed to his father by patient was uncollectable.his father was one of those rare dedicated doctor who worked out of goodness of his father heart.his mother was down on balboa island ang tried to sell the house there.he promised her that when he would buy the house back and he was going to make sure that he return he get paid for every hour put in.

Suddently 2 day later mr.bradsaw said to katy that he accepted her application , he asked katy to work with steven for taking care and they would get half payer each other.Then they tried to look for book about how to care a blind boy they met in the library acciddently and there was something which made katy was in falling in love with steve when they were in library they swent to forbidden basement of library to take a important book about how to care a blind boy and they strayed there . and steve kissed katy there, that’s made katy sure that she was falling in love to steve but she said nothing about it.

3.       Climax

The next few weeks with michael were terrible to her, she’d ever fought for the job .her mother and her father forced to tace care “regular” children , because they tought that taking care regular children would be much easier .but katy kept her going to work for caring michael. She tought that she didn’t want life “easier” she’d love challenges and michael was a huge challenge for her.

For the first day with michael ,she was discourage .He wouldn’t smile.Nothing she showed him or told him with would make him smile. He always complained and he threw the braille watch in the fish pond. That’s terrible to her, katy felt like he was taking to the stone bench. There must be something that can make him come out of his shell. Michael was very angry when she chased away a strayer dog .finnaly steven let michel to take care a strayer dog. Katy was more terrible when they heard from edna, her friend. that steve has a steady girl friend named samantha whereas steve and katy have kissed two times and they usually have dinner each evening. He was really broken hearth but she  forced herself to always smile as he was happy or in great condition .

4.      End

 Steven and katy took michael to Sandcastle Care Center, it  was a kind of halfway place for kids with physical disabilities.there were kids everywhere,in wheelchairs and on crutches .some where bent over books,doing homework or reading braille. They  brought Michael to the center every week day afternoon ,and michael was also taught braille by Mrs.Chusy.Mr.Bradsaw  bought michael a special watch.that was in braille.They have got a few book about braille. Michael,steve and  katy  spent most of the morning lerning about that.

Michael met a friend named Tammy reams. Tammy  is seven about michael’s age . she was in a car accident last month and has just  learned there she always be blind .Tammy and michael were a good friend for each other. Michael,steven and katy spent a golden ways by building castles in the sand. They did this activty everyday They also participated sandcastle contest, The sandcastle contest is set for august twenty-eighth. Michael,katy and steve was a winning in sandcastle contest and they got a check for one hundred dollar as their winning.michael was all smiles. The summer was perfect.katy was dividing her time between michael and the center and steve. It was happy time, they were becoming very close friend,the three of them .Michael was a changed little boy, although he still had his angry and frustrating moments. It taught michael to laugh again and steve said that samantha and him didn’t have a special relationship. He asked katy to be her girl friend.george (michael’s dog) was a part of them too , they never failed to take him a long .they always kept him. Katy’s parents and pete gave her hugs and sympathy for their winning.Steve and katy would be together for a long time,through autumns,winters,spring and especially through summers.and they would still have their dreams. They have gotten the most challenging one of their life.

CHAPTER II

CHARACTER ANALYSIS OF “SUMMER DREAMS”

A.    PROTAGONIST

1.      Katy Spring

She was patient one with her life , althought everybody forced her to be upset she’has never   been angry or taken revenge with them.she kept struggling for her summer promise.

2.      Steve Kaplan

Steve was kind and cheerful ,this character made michael and katy love him so much,he always helped katy spring in trouble.

3.      Pete

Pete was katy’s brother ,he was also kind and so respect  katy, he always supported katy to face katy’s challenge like katy’s broken heart or when katy felt upset and giving up with her job.

4.      Mr. Bradsaw

Mr.Bradsaw always supported katy and steven for taking care his son, he haven’t never been angry whatever they did .

5.      Tammy reams

Tammy reams  is seven about michael’s age . she was in a car accident last month and has just  learned she always be blind

6.      Katy’s Mother

Katy’s mother always supported katy and kept struggling to make katy never giving up with his summer promise.

B.     ANTAGONIST

1.       Edna

She is katy’s friend but she always told lie about Steve ,she said that Steve had a special relationship . Actually Steve had broken with samantha a long ago. It made katy was so upset.and disturb katy’s activities.

2.      Michael

In the first meeting with katy and steve, michael was bad condition so he did whatever he want ,he always was angry with them. But so far he closed with them he didn’t have bad temprament anymore.

3.      Miss Gardenia

She is the public library employeer ,she was very cruel ,she didn’t help katy and steve for finding some old book about how to take care a blind children.it made they entered to forbidden room in the library.

Samantha was Steve’s steady former, the shadow of story about Steve and samatha made katy was really broken hearth and so upset.

4.      Tammy reams

Tammy reams  is seven about michael’s age . she was in a car accident last month and has just  learned she always be blind

5.      Katy’s Father

Katy’s father was the first challenging for katy,because he suggested katy to work for taking care a regular children not a blind boy. But finally his father agreed katy’s decision and supported her.

6.      George

George was michael’s dog , michael was found by katy in michael’s field.george was made michael so happy. Michael always played with goerge.

CHAPTER III

THE SETTING ANALYSIS OF “SUMMER DREAMS”

            The setting of summer dreams isn’t clear, Because it was rarely stated in novel.

1. The Setting of Time

1.      Monday morning , katy was up bright and early ok, she was moving(take care michael) plan A to plan B

2.      Steve pulled up an old yellow thunderbird when he picked katy up to had dinner, since 1965 his father owned this car.

3.      On July 4 Steve and katy took michael to spesial firefoxexhibition at knott’s barry farm.

4.      The sandcastle contest is set for August twenty-eighth

2. The Setting of Place

1.      Katy try to look for job in star and the national enquirer

2.      Mr.bradsaw was planning on moving to the East Coast ,a special school for michael.

A.       SUPPORTING THEME

1.      Love Sacrifice

           From the first story we had known that how dipper katy’s love with steve . she never said to him , but in the end they loved each other.

2.      Life learning

This story is full of learning life how to face a problems or obstacles, and how to be patient one. How to keep struggling of them selves.

MAIN THEME

We can take a conclusion from the supporting theme above that the main theme of  Summer Dreams “ The efforts to be the most chalenging one of  katy’s life”

CHAPTER V

VALUES IN “ SUMMER DREAMS”

In this research, the researchers find some values, “if there is a will there is a way” it can be proved by katy’s struggling. She’s always patient and keep her struggling to face michael tought the first meeting michael hated her , and katy can keep her problem when he has been broken heart  and everybody forced him to leave her job for taking care michael,she has never been angry and change her planning .she was never  giving up so did Steven .They are still a young people but they have a big struggling to face a chaleging of their life.
